This hollow wooden holder was filled with water and held the whetstone for sharpening the grain cutting tool.. It was tied around the farmer's waist or hung from his belt. Upon reaching the field, it was shoved into the ground until needed. This holder has some tiny worm holes and is 10 inches long and 2 and 3/4 inches in diameter. A similar item is shown on Plate 65a of the book "Early American Wooden Ware" by Mary Earle Gould.
